Promising Jobs for Accounting Department Students

Since long time ago, accounting department has always been the most popular major for prospective students in Indonesia.

According to the Ministry of Research and Technology, accounting is ranked second most in 2020 SBMPTN exam participants after management major. Not without reason, this happens because the notion of a bright future prospect is still attached to students majoring in accounting.

A career in accounting is arguably the dream of many people. Besides having promising prospects, career advancement can be guaranteed. In addition, employment opportunities for the accounting sector are wide and wide open. Not surprisingly, many majoring in accounting chosen by high school students who will continue their studies.

1. Become a public accountant

Public accountants are independent accountants who analyze various financial statements without being bound by a company. Public accountants will later get wages from service users.

The services offered by a public accountant usually include general audits of financial statements, audits of the appropriateness of company operations, reporting of tax consequences, and financial policy consultations. Opinions expressed by public accountants tend to be more neutral than internal auditors working for companies.

2. Checking the company's finances by becoming an internal auditor

Companies in any field definitely need the role of an internal auditor whose job is to ensure the results of the company's financial statements are in accordance with the originals. Internal auditors must also ensure that all management has conducted business efficiently and that there are no deviations.

Internal auditor profession requires high honesty so that there are no irregularities that are left just like that in the company. Accounting fresh graduates who become internal auditors in big cities can be paid up to Rp. 7 million to Rp. 10 million per month. As for foreign companies, an internal auditor staff can be paid more than IDR 10 million.

3. Become a financial planner

The number of middle classes in Indonesia is increasing every year. To improve welfare, they need someone who can provide advice on financial management. Many people with accounting majors who have taken advantage of this opportunity and are in the profession of financial planners.

For career advancement, after completing college in accounting, we can take a financial planning certification or what is commonly called a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). To get this certificate, we must pass the examination stages, namely Foundation in Financial Planning, Investment Planning, Risk Management & Insurance Planning and Retirement, Income Tax and Estate Planning.

4. Analyzing corporate or personal finances

Usually, individuals and business entities need financial analysts to translate company data which is then used as a basis for consideration of business decision making and business strategy going forward. Many financial analyst professionals in Indonesia handle securities companies and manage their clients' portfolios.

For a better career path, financial analysts can take the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification test. CFA is a professional certification in finance and investment that is recognized internationally and is issued by the CFA Institute. A financial analyst can take this certification test after having work experience in the field of finance for a minimum of 4 years. The average salary of a financial analyst can reach Rp. 7 million to more than Rp. 20 million per month.

5. Work at OJK or BI

Accounting graduates can also work in government agencies such as the Financial Services Authority (OJK) or Bank Indonesia (BI). Besides being prestigious, the salaries offered by the two agencies for fresh graduates are usually above average.


But given the rigorous selection process and competition that must be faced, it is better for students majoring in accounting to start actively organizing, attending English training, and learning relevant hard skills and soft skills from now on if they are aiming to work there.

In addition to having their own pride, government-owned agencies such as the OJK or BI offer more lucrative salaries for accounting fresh graduates. Even the salary of a staff member at OJK or BI can reach IDR 16 million per month.

6. Become a credit analyst and analyze one's credit ability

Credit analysts are usually needed by the banking or financing industry. The task of a credit analyst is to measure the ability of prospective loan seekers to pay installments and interest per month. Credit analyst is also the one who assesses, evaluates, and proposes nominal loans that can be provided by banks or finance companies to prospective borrowers.

A credit analyst, both at a bank and a finance company, has an average salary of around Rp.5.5 million to Rp15 million per month.

7. Help the government by becoming a civil servant

Accounting department is always needed in any field of work, including in government. Every government agency definitely needs workers with accounting backgrounds to handle all financial affairs. No wonder every job opening for Civil Servant Candidates is available for an accounting major.

Accounting majors working in government agencies can reach Rp. 5 million to Rp. 7 million per month. However, this figure is only in the form of basic salary, not including additional benefits such as family allowances, general benefits, performance, achievement rewards, and other benefits. If the benefits are added to the basic salary, the income obtained can reach at least Rp. 9 million per month.

8. Educator Accountants

In addition to working in government agencies, private companies, or SOEs, accounting graduates can also become educators who provide material inside and outside the classroom. Aside from being a lecturer or teacher, an educator accountant can also become a consultant who fills financial seminars. Or work in research institutions that examine accounting problems or issues that occur in society.

9. Build your own business and become an entrepreneur

Accounting major students are flexible enough to enter various business fields. Moreover, because many study subjects about business development, did not rule out the possibility of accounting graduates opening their own jobs by opening a business.
